Renewable Energy

Alternative energy sources deliver power with minimal impact on the environment.

Wind Turbine

Wind energy is one of the fastest growing sources of electricity generation with largely untapped resources throughout the country.   Wind energy is a clean energy source that can be relied on for long-term future energy and is very much at the heart of the farming business.

Energy costs was one of the company’s main outputs and with the costs attributed to this resource the business needed to find cost effective and efficient ways of reducing this essential requirement.  An Enercon E48 800kw down rated to 500km was constructed and fully operational by October 2013.

Biomass Boilers

We have now installed two biomass boilers. After the success of the 50kw boiler at Haughhead, Laurencekirk, supplying heating to the farm house and two cottages, we installed a 500kw biomass boiler at Blackiemuir Farm. This boiler is used to dry grain, wood chip and bulbs. The benefits of wood-fuelled heating are reduced carbon emissions, carbon dioxide emitted when wood is burned is the same amount that was absorbed over the months and years that the plant was growing, and reduced heating costs.

Solar Panels

We have a 50kw solar panel system on the roof of our cold store. Solar power is the conversion of sunlight into electricity, using photovoltaics (PV). PV converts light into electric current using the photoelectric effect.
